We were happy to read that, the majority of respondents (77%) believed that the EPAR PhD day helped them to improve their skills needed to complete a PhD trajectory, 71% believed that their career skills had improved because of this day and 70% had learned to orientate themselves better in the academic world.

Overall, almost 80% of the respondents had a positive impression of the workshops. For all the workshops participants thought the trainers were friendly, approachable, and easy to understand. Up to 70% of the respondents indicated they improved their skills because of these workshops, and that they would recommend them to others.

Those of the participants that stayed for the drinks were very positive about this opportunity to mingle with the Rector Magnificus. It is nice that the evaluations confirm that the EPAR Career PhD day can make an important contribution to the education and training of PhD candidates!

The National PhD Congress is the career event for (future) PhD candidates. At this event there will be companies as well as Universities present that want to get in contact with the PhD candidates. At The National PhD congress, a special workshop programme is offered for people that want to orientate on doing a PhD, but mostly for PhD candidates that want to orientate on a job outside of science. This workshop program is entirely free for visitors of the congress.

The program consists of two types: workshops for first and second year PhD students, that assist you during the PhD trajectory, and workshops for third and fourth-year PhD students, that are focused at your career after getting that PhD.

OPENING AND INFORMATION MARKET

After the registration and formal opening in the corridor in front of M1-13 we start with the printer and information market. There it will be possible to visit several PhD-relevant facilities such as the beadle’s office, the librarian, and professional printers for your thesis, while enjoying a coffee and a sandwich. Afterwards, you can participate in two workshop in two rounds of 1,5 hour.

WORKSHOPS

For first and second year PhD students, we have available the following workshops:

• How to manage my agenda?!! Time is running fast and what am I going to do? How to plan my work? Help! Where do I start….? If you follow the workshop ‘Time-management’ you will learn how to deal with time, your activities and ensure your week is effective.
• Standing before people and telling about my research? Which skills do I need? How to keep their attention? During the workshop ‘Presentation techniques’ you will learn how to become an excellent speaker.

For third and fourth year PhD students, there are two other workshops:

• Career choice. What do I want to do, stick with science or rather not? What are my feelings and thoughts about (specific) jobs? During the workshop ‘Career choice’ you discover your values and preferences.
• I’m almost finished but what are my skills and qualities? I can do research but what else…. How to sell myself at interviews with potential employers? No worries! If you know your strengths and weaknesses you can focus more easily on vacancies and job interviews. So join the workshop ‘Know your qualities’.

We hope to see you there at January 18!

For 1st and 2nd year PhD’s there will be workshops that focus on making a good and efficient start with your PhD research and at your first conference. For 3th and 4th year PhD’s there will be workshops that focus on what is next after your PhD; how to decide what to do and to become aware of what you have to offer. Besides that, there will be an information market with amongst others the University Library and a number of PhD thesis printing companies.

Have you ever wondered what it takes to become a good scientist? Herman Lelieveldt has recently published Promoveren, een wegwijzer voor de beginnend wetenschapper, a Dutch book in which he discusses the ins and outs of turning your PhD project into a success. In cooperation with Amsterdam University Press , EPAR will give away five brand new copies of the fifth edition of Herman Lelieveldt’s handbook for starting scientists. All you need to do is send an e-mail to epar@epar.nl before October 16, 2011 in order to let us know you want to win this book. EPAR will randomly select 5 winners out of the participants and will inform these winners by e-mail.

The book discusses many interesting aspects of a PhD project – all in Dutch. According to Amsterdam University Press,

Tot slot voorziet Lelieveldt in een praktische leidraad voor de voorbereidingen van de daadwerkelijke promotie. Een compleet overzicht van wat een jonge promovendus te wachten staat.
