Suzanne van Veen (iBMG)

President, PNN Representative

I am a PhD candidate at the iBMG, the department Health Insurance. My research is about risk equalization in competitive health insurance markets. I will investigate how we can evaluate the risk-equalization model and how we can improve this. The interest for this research stems from my Bachelor and Master study ‘Health Economics, Policy and Management’ at the Erasmus University. Last year (2010) I obtained by Master degree in Health Economics. As EPAR board member, I will be involved in all kind of issues that are relevant for PhD-candidates. In particular, I want to bring PhD-candidates together so that we can learn from each other experiences, share ideas and make friendships.

Jeanine Porck (ESE)

Treasurer

I am a PhD candidate at ERIM affiliated with the Econometric Institute. My research project is focused on intergroup relations and performance in organizations. I obtained a Master degree in Industrial Design Engineering at the Delft University of Technology. In Delft I also gained experience in representing students during a year as President of the Central Student Council. I like to be involved in all the matters that are of interest to PhD students of Erasmus University!

Alexander Hogenboom (ESE)

Communication

Being an ERIM PhD student within the Business Intelligence group, I am interested in researching the utilization of methods and techniques from informatics for facilitating or supporting decision making processes. My fascination for this research area stems from my undergraduate and graduate studies; I hold a Bachelor of Science degree as well as a (cum laude) Master of Science degree in Economics and Informatics. My current PhD research is focused on discovering economic sentiment in texts by utilizing argumentation structures (i.e., natural language processing), yet other research interests include the Semantic Web, learning agents, and supply chain management. During my studies, I have been involved in many promotional activities for my university (as ambassador for Erasmus University Rotterdam) as well as my study association (website, posters, flyers, etcetera). As an EPAR board member, I will make sure that EPAR benefits from my experience!

Frederik Hogenboom (ESE)

Webmaster

During my years as a student at the Erasmus University Rotterdam, I obtained my Bachelor and cum laude Master degree in Economics and Informatics, specializing in Computational Economics. As a student, I was an active member of my study association (promotional activities), as well as student member and secretary of the Programme Advisory Committee Informatics & Economics. Furthermore, I published research mainly focusing on the Semantic Web and learning agents. Currently, I am active within the multidisciplinary field of Business Intelligence, and I continue my research in a PhD track. My research focuses on ways to employ financial event discovery in emerging news for algorithmic trading, hereby combining techniques from various disciplines, amongst which Semantic Web, text mining, artificial intelligence, machine learning, linguistics, and finance.

Board Member

As a PhD candidate in a very interdisciplinary and international program such as the European Doctorate in Law and Economics (EDLE), I am especially engaged in promoting communication and interaction between candidates of the different departments of our University and of different countries. The focus of my research at the Rotterdam Institute of Law and Economics lies on the interaction between individual preferences for equity and fairness, as well as compensation for breach of contract. This type of research involves economic theory, designing and implementing economic experiments to test theoretical hypothesis that are relevant for the contract law, and the analysis of the adequacy of different contractual doctrines in context of breach of contractual agreements. Given the fact that I come from Brazil, I also hope to establish such communication between PhD candidates in a nice, friendly and productive environment. The activities from EPAR, as well as the activities of our university, are becoming more international and interdisciplinary, and our entire PhD community can only profit from it.

Jacqueline Goos (EMC)

Board Member

I obtained a degree in Medicine and a master degree in Neuroscience at the Érasmus University Medical Centre. I am a PhD-student at the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Handsurgery at the Erasmus University Medical Centre since August 2011. My research project is focused on genetic alterations in craniofacial malformations. Unraveling genetic information requires advanced information and communication technologies (ICT), therefore we operate in close collaboration with the Department of Bioinformatics of the Erasmus University Medical Centre. As board member of EPAR and representative of the Erasmus University Medical Centre I’ll try to bridge the distance between Woudestein and Hoboken!
