This workshop is meant for PHD’s who want to prepare for a network- event, a jobinterview or professional conversation where you have to present yourself. What do you want the other person to know about you, how do you profile yourself in a good way and still be authentic? How to prepare a good pitch and of course….the do’s and don’ts in pitching/branding!
Target group: PHD’s, who are actively looking around for job opportunities, inside or outside academia and who want to feel more confident in their personal branding.

After the workshop you will have a better idea of how to present yourself and so be succesfull in your networking and jobinterviews and feel like you’re still the person you want to be!

Open Access (OA) increases the findability, visibility and use of academic research results. More and more funders of research demand sharing the results with no costs for the reader. It is Erasmus University’s policy that all EUR scientific output should be published in Open Access. In 2019 the EUR policy should be in effect. This workshop will get you prepared for OA.
Results
After attending this workshop you will have a better view on the benefits of publishing in Open Access for you as a researcher. You will understand why Open Access is a broad international academic movement that seeks free and open online access to academic publications. The workshop will offer you the tools to publish in Open Access and demonstrate the possibilities to do so. After this workshop you know how to boost your career via Open Access.

Because of the enormous growth of scholarly communication channels, it’s becoming more difficult to identify which papers belong to a given scientific author. Common names, errors and people who change their name when they get married or divorced add to the confusion. A personal number helps scientists to stay on top of their professional activities and ensure that their work will be recognized.
In this hands-on workshop you’ll learn how you can distinguish yourself from every other researcher by using author identifiers and profiles such as ORCID, ResearcherID and Google Scholar Author Profile. Don’t forget to bring your own laptop for this practical workshop!

To find the job you want after your PhD, you must know who you are and what you have to offer as a professional. But you also need to know what your ambitions are in terms of a job, further career and where to find it. And finally, you have to know how to connect with the job market, how to find contacts and how to be found by the right people.
During this session, you learn techniques that enable you to look at yourself as a product, create your own job market and efficiently connect both to find your job. Your professional appeal, finding the right companies, recruitment channels, networking, social media and application skills are addressed in the workshop. With a mix of practical theory, an inspirational story from a former PhD student, short exercises, a dialogue with a former recruiter and of course tips, tricks and stories from your colleagues, you will be able to effectively increase your chances on the job market.
Results
In this workshop, you create a plan to find your job effectively. Just by asking three questions: what am I as a product? Which market do I want to work in? How do I organise activities to become known in the job market and find that job? Inspiration, energy and structure to turn thoughts into actions.

Maurice van Dijk, experienced professional in the field of Human Resources Management and since 2008 an independent (career) coach and trainer. Until December 2017, Maurice also worked as an interim career coach at EUR for 2.5 years. As guest speaker, a former PhD student, he will tell you his path to a job after his PhD. A former recruiter tells you how recruiters search for potential employees and how they look at you as an applicant. Both now working at EUR.

We all have a desire to shape our own lives the way we want and to achieve our goals. Personal leadership is a key success factor here: leading yourself by truly understanding who you are, what it is that you value most and how to make conscious choices to get where you want to be.
In our busy and hectic lives, we do not always find the time to answer these questions, the time to reflect and find our own answers. In this workshop, you will gain more insights into who you are, what your qualities and pitfalls are and what really matters to you. We offer you tools and exercises to gain new insights that will help you lead yourself in a more effective way.

This workshop is meant for you, the young researcher who is thinking about the next step in his/her career. As a scientist, you should know your strengths/skills and how to translate them to possible jobs. You are probably aware of your knowledge and experience, but may not always be conscious of all the other skills you have. These transferable skills make you valuable on the job market. In this workshop, we will make a start with identifying your transferable skills and translating them to possible career opportunities.

After the workshop, you will have a better idea of your specific skills that could be interesting for working inside or outside academia. And although it’s a short workshop, you will get some idea about …your next step.

“I read in your curriculum that you are creative. Can you give me an example?”
When you go to job interviews or network meetings, you will frequently be asked about your strengths and qualities. 150 word pitches are short (150 words take about a minute), very focused stories that will help you in those interviews and show who you are, what you are capable of and how you work.
150 word pitches are a very concrete tool to make sure that you come prepared!
Results
You will walk away from this workshop with your first 150 word pitch on one of your core qualities. You will get a good structure to write more 150 word pitches yourself and you will know what makes a good pitch! You will have presented your first pitch and you will get feedback from the trainer and the other participants.

The workshop focuses on the general approach to writing grant applications. This approach can be used to apply for such grants as a Rubicon or Veni grant at NWO, a Marie Curie Fellowship at the European Commission or an ERC Starting Grant at the ERC. These are the principal funders and researchers generally have the most difficulty with grant applications for these funders. However, participants will gain insights that are also applicable to applications for grants from other funders. There will be less focus on knowledge utilisation, as a separate workshop is being held on this.

The insights gained by participants can also be used for other funders who request comparable paragraphs or can be used outside the context of a scholarship application, such as the valorisation/social impact of ongoing PhD research.
